FRINGEWORLD 2017 – Kitten N’ Lou: Holier Than Thou (4.5 stars)

Review by Laura Money

Hot off the heels of their recent “#1 Burlesque Duo in the World” win, cabaret theatre first couple, Kitten N’ Lou are back and they are bringing Perth the most epic show yet! Inspired by the wackiness and tackiness that is the Holy Bible, this amazingly glamorous duo tackle the lies, the bullshit, and the frankly camp overtones of the most revered script ever written by man. Yes: by man. In Holier Than Thou God speaks and SHE is a drag queen! She dispels the myths of the bible and argues with the patriarchal narrator about the origins of the tales – and how toxic they are for women especially. The cheers are loud and the revolutionary vibe in the air is palpable. Kitten and Lou are loud and proud feminist icons.

Dressing as everyone from Adam and Eve, to David and Goliath, to Mary and Jesus, and of course Mary Magdalene, no-one is untouched! The opening number sees the couple as the original couple, Adam and Eve, and their (many) romps in the garden of Eden establish that they had God’s will in mind when they attempted to be fruitful and multiply over and over and over again. It’s after eating the apple and being slut-shamed by the voice-over Narrator man that Kitten and Lou decide to break down the bullshit of the bible.

Delving into a box crudely labelled ‘Bible Stuff’ Kitten dons a gladiators costume, and Lou a loincloth. The couple’s obvious height difference is hilariously sent-up in a rendition of David and Goliath as you’ve never seen it portrayed. Samson has his hair cut in a 60s style salon by a bored looking Delilah, Moses wanders the desert for 40 days and 40 nights – boring! Each interpretation is camp and fun, none so much as the fly dance – Kitten and Lou are the sexiest flies who ever got off of Noah’s Ark! They perform a mesmerising dance that contains their signature mix of beauty and hilarity.

A highlight of the show is Kitten’s burlesque dance as the ‘Burning Bush’ – wonderfully reminiscent of Thomas Edison’s Annabelle dances. Of course, it is with the finale that everything really climaxes. Kitten and Lou take us to the edge of all things religious – ripping up the bible and creating a non-patriarchal, homosexual agenda that is nothing short of fabulous. Stripping bare – make-up and all, it is clear that all you need in this world is honesty, acceptance, and above all, love.
