Two million Italians signed a petition calling for the art of Neapolitan pizza* to be globally recognised as a world heritage and it’s paid off!

Recently UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) announced its Intangible Cultural Heritage list for 2017 and ‘The Art of the Neapolitan Pizzaiuolo’ takes home the honour.

The art can now stand side by side with the likes of the Great Barrier Reef as being globally recognised by UNESCO.

The list was announced at an event in Seoul which was attended by Australian delegate for the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN), Johnny Di Francesco – that’s right, there’s an association dedicated to promoting and protecting the art of making true Neapolitan pizza.

As the owner of the 400 Gradi Group and Pizza World Champion, Johnny creates delicious pizzas on a daily basis and is thrilled that the techniques used are now globally celebrated.

Receiving a pizza-tossing statue alongside Antonio Pace, President of the AVPN, Johnny said, “We are very excited that the art of creating true Neapolitan pizza has been named an Intangible Cultural Heritage. We had backing from two million Italians which just goes to show how passionate we are about pizza! Passed down through generations, the true Neapolitan pizza represents the heart and soul of Italian culture so we’re over the moon to make it onto the list.”

This is fantastic news for pizza lovers around the world; perhaps a celebratory pizza is to be had tonight?

*The true Neapolitan pizza consists of a thin base with a puffy crust, slightly charred and no more than four toppings.
