Meet the Scientists at Museum Victoria
To celebrate National Science Week in August, Museum Victoria is holding a special series of Meet the Scientists education events aimed at high school students in Years 8 to 10.
Held over four days, at Melbourne Museum and Scienceworks, the Meet the Scientists program is aimed at educating students on the varied careers and endless opportunities open to them within the world of science.
Speakers from Museum Victoria include:
Senior Curator of Vertebrate Palaeontology, Dr Erich Fitzgerald,
Palaeontologist, Dr Tanya Hill,
Astronomer, Dr Jane Melville,
Herpetologist, Dr Katie Smith,
Herpetologist, Dr Kevin Rowe,
Mammologist, Dr Richard Marchant,
Entomologist, Dr Rolf Schmidt,
Marine Biologist, Mel Mackenzie
Dr Erich Fitzgerald, from the Melbourne Museum said “One of the most common questions students ask a scientist is ‘what do you actually do?’
The average school student understands what the day-to-day job of a lawyer, nurse or doctor involves; in these sessions we will reveal what it is that scientists do all day in their work with Museum Victoria.
Most kids haven’t had the chance to meet a scientist face-to-face before.”
During the one-hour sessions, students will hear from scientists describing their day job, and how they climbed the ranks.
Their most interesting discoveries will be explained, and students will have an opportunity to learn more with a Q & A session.
A number of sessions are also available to be live-streamed to schools in regional Victoria.
Museum Victoria’s Education and Community Programs department develops on-site programs at Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, IMAX and Scienceworks, outreach programs across regional Victoria, extensive online curriculum-related resources for teachers and students and teacher personal development programs.
